The closest airport to Rishikesh is Dehradun's Jolly Grant Airport, roughly 35-40 minutes by road from Muni Ki Reti. This airport has limited direct international connections, so most international travelers fly into a major Indian hub first (Delhi being the most common) and take a short domestic connecting flight to Dehradun. This is generally the fastest overall option if a convenient connecting flight is available.
Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport is the most common international gateway, with excellent global connectivity. From Delhi, you have two realistic options to reach Rishikesh: a domestic flight to Dehradun (as above), or overland travel by train or car, which takes longer but is often more economical and allows you to see more of the route.
Several trains run from Delhi to Haridwar (the nearest major train station to Rishikesh, about 25-30km away), with the journey typically taking 4-6 hours depending on the specific train. From Haridwar, a taxi or local transport covers the remaining distance to Rishikesh in roughly 45 minutes to an hour. This route is popular among budget-conscious and time-flexible travelers, and offers scenic views as the train moves from the plains toward the Himalayan foothills.
A direct car journey from Delhi to Rishikesh takes approximately 5-7 hours depending on traffic and route, and offers the most flexibility in terms of timing and stops along the way. This is generally the most expensive single option but can be cost-effective when split among several travelers arriving together.
