Understanding RYT 500

What Exactly Is
500-Hour Training?

Yoga Alliance — the global standard body for yoga education — defines the RYT 500 (Registered Yoga Teacher 500) as the highest teaching credential available to yoga professionals. It is not a single 500-day course. It is a two-part achievement:

Part 1
200-Hour Foundation
RYS 200 certified training at a registered school. Covers classical Hatha yoga, pranayama, philosophy, anatomy and teaching methodology. Qualifies you to teach as RYT 200.
Part 2
300-Hour Advanced
RYS 300 certified advanced training. Covers advanced asana, Vedanta philosophy, Sanskrit, Yoga Nidra, advanced pranayama and retreat design. Combined with your 200hr = full RYT 500.

Common Questions

Everything About
500-Hour Training

What is a 500-hour yoga teacher training?+
It is the highest Yoga Alliance teaching credential, achieved by completing a 200-hour RYS 200 program followed by a 300-hour RYS 300 program. Together these total 500 hours of training and qualify you for RYT 500 registration with Yoga Alliance USA.
Do I need to complete 500 hours all at once?+
No. The 200-hour and 300-hour programs can be done at different times — even in different years. Many teachers complete their 200hr, teach for a year or two, then return for the 300hr advanced program. Both must be at Yoga Alliance registered schools.
What is the difference between RYT 500 and E-RYT 500?+
RYT 500 comes from completing 500 hours of training at registered schools. E-RYT 500 (Experienced) requires an additional 1,000+ documented teaching hours beyond your certification. E-RYT 500 is required to lead teacher training programs and teach CEUs (Continuing Education Units) — important for mentoring other teachers.
Can I do my 300 hours at a different school from where I did my 200 hours?+
Yes. Yoga Alliance allows combining certificates from different registered schools. If you completed a 200-hour TTC elsewhere, you can do your 300-hour advanced program at Yoga Vedanta Trust to achieve RYT 500.
How long is the 500-hour training at Yoga Vedanta Trust?+
The 200-hour program is 28 days, and the 300-hour advanced program is 35 days — a total of 63 days of residential training. Most students complete these in two separate visits to Rishikesh, often in different seasons of the same year.
Is the 500-hour training worth it for a career in yoga?+
Yes — especially if you want to teach internationally, lead retreats, work in corporate wellness, or eventually mentor other teachers. RYT 500 commands significantly higher teaching rates and opens roles that 200-hour certificates do not qualify for.
