What to Pack for Yoga Teacher Training in India — Complete Packing List 2026
The Golden Rule of Packing for India
Pack less than you think you need. You will buy things in Rishikesh — and everything you need is available locally at a fraction of Western prices. Focus on essentials, leave space for what you discover there.
Yoga Clothing — What to Bring
- Yoga pants / leggings: 3–4 pairs minimum. Breathable, flexible fabric. No denim.
- Yoga tops: 4–5 loose, breathable tops. Avoid anything too revealing — India is conservative.
- Shawl or pashmina: Essential for early morning practice, Ganga aarti, temple visits.
- Light jacket or hoodie: Mornings are cool even in summer. Essential in Oct–March.
- Warm layer: For December–February, pack a fleece or light down jacket.
- Loose cotton pants: For evening walks and philosophy class — comfortable and respectful.
Yoga Props — Do Not Bring
All yoga props are provided — mat, blocks, straps, bolster. Do not pack these. They are heavy and unnecessary.
Practical Essentials
- Universal power adapter (India uses Type C and D plugs)
- Reusable water bottle — insulated stainless steel (Rishikesh has safe filtered water)
- Personal medical kit: paracetamol, antacid, antihistamine, plasters, antiseptic
- Prescription medications — bring 2x what you need with copies of prescriptions
- Sunscreen SPF 50+ (expensive and hard to find quality brands locally)
- Insect repellent (monsoon season especially)
- Small torch / headlamp (useful for early morning walks)
- Notebook and pens — for philosophy notes and journaling
Documents and Money
- Passport — valid for 6+ months beyond your travel date
- India e-Visa printout
- Travel insurance documents
- Course registration confirmation
- USD cash — most reliable currency in Rishikesh. ATMs available but can have issues.
- Bank cards — Visa and Mastercard accepted at most ATMs
What to Buy Locally in Rishikesh
Save luggage weight — buy these in Rishikesh at much lower prices:
- Mala beads (₹200–₹2,000 depending on material)
- Yoga books and philosophy texts (many shops near Laxman Jhula)
- Cotton yoga wear (local markets — much cheaper than buying at home)
- Rudraksha jewelry
- Indian SIM card with data (Airtel or Jio — buy at airport or Rishikesh market)
What to Leave at Home
- Expensive jewelry — leave it. Rishikesh ashram life has no use for it.
- Revealing clothing — bikinis, shorts, very short skirts. Rishikesh is conservative.
- Excessive cosmetics — your skin will thank you for simplifying.
- More than one pair of nice shoes — you will wear sandals or flip-flops 90% of the time.
