Living in an Ashram — What to Expect During Yoga Teacher Training in India
The Honest Picture of Ashram Life
If you have ever imagined yoga teacher training in India, you have probably pictured something between a luxury spa and a Himalayan monastery. The reality is somewhere in between — and far more rewarding than either.
Ashram life during yoga teacher training is structured, simple, and intentional. Everything is designed to support your practice and remove distraction. Here is what to genuinely expect.

The Food — What Is Sattvic Diet?
Sattvic food is the yogic approach to eating — pure, light, and carefully prepared to support clarity of mind and steadiness of energy. In practice, this means:
- 100% vegetarian — no meat, fish, or eggs
- No onion or garlic (considered rajasic — stimulating)
- No caffeine — chai is replaced by herbal teas and hot water with lemon
- Simple, nourishing meals: dal, rice, sabzi, roti, fresh salads, fruits
- Served at fixed meal times — no snacking between meals
Most students miss coffee desperately for the first 3–5 days. By day 10, most say their energy and focus are better than they have ever been.
Accommodation
During our programs, students stay in comfortable private rooms in carefully selected venues within the practice area — with attached bathrooms, basic furnishings, and clean bedding. This is not a 5-star hotel — simplicity is intentional. The fewer distractions your environment has, the deeper your practice goes.
Phone and Internet
There is no formal phone ban — but students are encouraged to limit social media and screen time. Many students choose to do a partial digital detox. The transformation happens in the space between screens.
What Surprises Western Students Most
- How quickly the body adapts to the early schedule
- How much better they feel without caffeine by week 2
- How deeply they connect with fellow students from around the world
- How emotional the graduation ceremony feels
- How much they do not want to leave
